King David learned to walk with God not as a king, but as a shepherd's boy in the wilderness. I often tried to imagine what this wilderness was like. Was it desert with nothing in sight? Were there trees, mountains, or rocks? How much were they like mine? How different?
I had the chance to visit Israel this summer with Light A Candle. We went to many different sights, all with historical significance, but this one made me ponder; was this the place David would wonder to commune with God?
The site is called David's Waterfall–a haven amidst wild desert. Where harsh rock met cool waters, I could see why David may have come to this place and where much of his inspiration for the Psalms lies. For example, this Psalm which sprang to mind during my stay:
1 The Lord is my shepherd;
I have all that I need.
2 He lets me rest in green meadows;
he leads me beside peaceful streams.
3 He renews my strength.
He guides me along right paths,
bringing honor to his name.
4 Even when I walk
through the darkest valley,
I will not be afraid,
for you are close beside me.
Your rod and your staff
protect and comfort me.
5 You prepare a feast for me
in the presence of my enemies.
You honor me by anointing my head with oil.
My cup overflows with blessings.
6 Surely your goodness and unfailing love will pursue me
all the days of my life,
and I will live in the house of the Lord
forever.
I have all that I need.
2 He lets me rest in green meadows;
he leads me beside peaceful streams.
3 He renews my strength.
He guides me along right paths,
bringing honor to his name.
4 Even when I walk
through the darkest valley,
I will not be afraid,
for you are close beside me.
Your rod and your staff
protect and comfort me.
5 You prepare a feast for me
in the presence of my enemies.
You honor me by anointing my head with oil.
My cup overflows with blessings.
6 Surely your goodness and unfailing love will pursue me
all the days of my life,
and I will live in the house of the Lord
forever.
